Digital Competence and the Digital Skills Centre


Being Digitally Competent is a pre-requisite for living, learning and working in the 21st Century


The definition of what this means takes many different forms and there are a range of frameworks and a multitude of guidance to help understand the competencies and capabilities needed to thrive in today's digital environment.

A useful source of advice and support for Higher Education is provided by the JISC 'Building Digital Capability' project, which includes their Digital Capability Framework.

More information on this project may be found here, but the following model provides a summary of the 6 Capabilities required to be 'Digitally Competent' or 'Digitally Literate':

ICT proficiency lies at the heart of this model and so wherever your current focus lies - be it HE study, teaching practice or employability - a solid foundation in IT and Digital Skills is an 'Essential' criterion, not just 'Desirable'.

In the context of the JISC model, ICT Proficiency is defined as:


The Digital Skills Centre's strategic focus is on providing this bedrock of 'ICT Proficiency' on which to build digital capability and expertise.

We can provide the means by which you can consolidate existing skills, develop new capabilities and, in the form of Digital Skills Certification, gain recognition for your abilities and achievements.
