Health & Safety: Serious Student Unacceptable Behaviour

Serious Student Unacceptable Behaviour

The University now has a student disciplinary policy which allows University (via the student’s School) to take action over incidents of unacceptable conduct by students

The full policy is available in pdf here.

A brief summary of points:

Policy is designed to deal with issues of students unacceptable conduct such as:

  • Activity constituting a breach of Univ equality and diversity policy

  • Assault, aggressive, threatening, indecent, disorderly, offensive or other unreasonable behaviour either orally or in writing

  • ID card misuse

  • Misuse of Univ premises, computers, network

  • Misappropriation of Univ funds/assets

  • Criminal offences

  • Offensive posters etc

  • Conduct likely to injure students or staff

How To Report An Issue

If you witness/are involved in such an incident:

  • You can fill in the Report Form  (link from page 7 of the policy)  – this needs to be sent to

  • Students can also report incidents themselves – via the same form

  • On receipt of the form  the Disciplinary Officer will pass details to the local manager. This is the Dean of School of the student concerned (or their nominated manager)

They will then consider the incident and can take actions/impose penalties as set out in the policy

Remember – During an Incident

Any staff member can contact Security Control (x6666) if it’s an emergency or threatening situation so they can attend and deal with this (eg asking a student to leave the premises)

Unacceptable conduct from a student when you think there may be a mental health or disability related cause is still unacceptable conduct so should still be reported this way for action.

The University will take a student’s circumstances into account when investigating incidents and deciding a course of action.
