Hansard is the official record of debates, speeches, oral and written answers/statements, petitions and Westminster Hall discussions in the Houses of Parliament. Historical records for Hansard from 1803 to 2005 are available online at http://hansard.millbanksystems.com

Format of the reference

You will need:

  • HC or HL Deb date of debate
  • Title of debate
  • Day and month
  • Volume number
  • Column number/s
  • Web address
  • Date accessed

 

Format:

HC or HL Deb date of debate. Title of the debate, Day month, volume number, column number./s Available from: www.webaddress.com [Accessed day month year].

Example:

House of Commons Debate (1959) Penal practice, 2 February, vol.599, cc. 31- 36. Available from: https://api.parliament.uk/historichansard/commons/1959/feb/02/penal-practice [Accessed 5 March 2021].
