Borrowing Items from the Library

How do I Borrow Items?

Covid-19 Reduced Service

If you would like to borrow a book from the library, this can be done online by placing a hold on the item via the library catalogue.  The book shelves in the library will not be available to students at present.

Please see the information about our Click and Collect Book service on our Reduced Services page

Please be assured that any fines incurred during this period will be waived when the library re-opens.

We’ve got over 200,000 books and DVDs across our libraries. You can borrow items using your LSBU ID card.Use the self-issue machines on Level 1 East and 1 West of the Perry Library.

Students and staff can place a hold for books and DVDs  via our catalogue when all our loanable copies are out on loan. We’ll email you when a copy is ready for you to collect.

If you forget to bring your ID then ask for a 'day pass' at the Perry Library reception desk. If you then want to borrow any items, you will need to come to the help desk with your 'day pass' - please check help desk opening times first.

If you have lost your student ID contact the Student Life Centre for a new one, and let the Library know so we can block your old card

How do I renew my items?

We’ll automatically renew items on your record a week before they are due back as long as

  • Other borrowers haven’t reserved them
  • Your library record with us isn’t expiring in the next few days, and isn’t blocked due to having incurred more than £10 in fines

Please look out for our library renewal emails which will let you know if your renewals have been successful (and the new due dates for your items) or if some items can’t be renewed and need to be returned to us.

It’s important to check these emails carefully when you get them. If an item has been reserved by another student, it must be returned by the due date. We charge fines for items which are returned late.

How much are the fines?

  • If you keep overdue items that are on hold then we will charge heavy fines: £2 per day per item (up to a maximum of £20 per item)
    • There will be a two day grace period on these fines: if an item is returned in the first two days overdue then we won’t fine you but from the 3rd day the fine of £6 will be charged (and will increase by £2 each day after that if the item is still not returned)
  • If an item still isn't returned we will bill you for the replacement cost of the item
  • If you incur charges on your record of more than £10 then you won't be able to borrow more items from us until this fine is reduced
