Perry Library: Borrowing from the Library

Returning Books

You do not need to come to campus to return books

It is possible to create a postage label and return books free of charge via Royal Mail using our Freepost service

Items currently on loan

Now that Perry Library has reopened we are bringing back “automatic renewals” on items on which are loan.
This means books and DVDs on your account will start to automatically renew each week and you will once again start to receive emails letting you know the new return dates for your items.
It also means you might start to receive notifications on some items you have which we can’t renew.

For example, you may find some items won’t be renewed:
•    If a book you have has been requested by another student
•    If your course has come to an end and your student record, staff or visitor membership has expired or is expiring
•    If you have charges over £10 on your record

If this happens you can contact our staff online at or via our Live Chat to discuss the issue stopping your items being renewed and to see if it can be resolved.

If the items do need to come back to us then you can now return books to the Perry Library – we have a returns ‘book bin’ at our main entrance and you can drop your items back there at any time.
Library staff will empty this each day. Items are being quarantined for 72 hours and will then be removed from your library record.
If you can’t safely get to campus you can also post items back to us at Perry Library (Book Returns); London South Bank University; 103 Borough Road; London; SE1 0AA.
If you are unable to return items due to the current circumstances do please get in touch with us to discuss.
Don’t worry if the current situation means you have to return items a little late as we are not fining for overdue items at the moment but if an item can’t be renewed please do return it to us when you can.

How do I place a hold?

Due to recent network disruption it's not currently possible to place holds via the catalogue, instead if you want to place a hold please contact us with the details listed below via and staff will assist you:

  • Name
  • Student ID Number
  • Username
  • Book Title

How do I renew my items?

We’ll automatically renew items on your record a week before they are due back as long as

  • Other borrowers haven’t reserved them
  • Your library record with us isn’t expiring in the next few days, and isn’t blocked due to having incurred more than £10 in fines

Please look out for our library renewal emails which will let you know if your renewals have been successful (and the new due dates for your items) or if some items can’t be renewed and need to be returned to us.

It’s important to check these emails carefully when you get them. If an item has been reserved by another student, it must be returned by the due date. We charge fines for items which are returned late.

How much are the fines?

  • If you keep overdue items that are on hold then we will charge heavy fines: £2 per day per item (up to a maximum of £20 per item)
  • There will be a two day grace period on these fines: if an item is returned in the first two days overdue then we won’t fine you but from the 3rd day the fine of £6 will be charged (and will increase by £2 each day after that if the item is still not returned)
  • If an item still isn't returned we will bill you for the replacement cost of the item
  • If you incur charges on your record of more than £10 then you won't be able to borrow more items from us until this fine is reduced
